When we planned a romantic mountain biking weekend (yes – that’s romantic for us) in Tahoe, we had no idea we would end up in Fernley, NV buying the first of the two DR650s that would take us through South America. Some innocent craigslist browsing on Friday night led to two round trips to Fernley to test ride, and then purchase the 2004 DR650 that would become the zebra-mobile.

Pro-tip: When you buy a vehicle privately in Nevada, you need to bring temporary plates or plan on hauling the vehicle as the owner is required to keep the plates to turn into the DMV.
