When the Zebra realized that we would be hitting sub-zero temperatures along our route, she became VERY concerned. Needless to say, Zebras are happier in +40’C African temperatures, which is why we were both stoked to learn that we would be outfitted head to toe in Rev’it gear.
One of the first accessories we purchased for our DRs was a top rack, knowing the bulk of our luggage would be straddled behind the rider in a waterproof duffel bag. We had several requirements: it should accept Rotopax mounts, be made of steel for easy welding, be light while maintaining structural integrity and finally be neat and narrow. Our search lead us to Immix Racing, a US company based in Utah. Their “100% Warranty” policy impressed us, as did the good design of their products. We have equipped both our DRs with their racks, skid plates and handlebar risers.
Moto Scuderia has been the Wolf’s favorite KTM dealer for over 4 years now. Tired of parts departments unable to tell a 520 quick link from a 525, he tested Scuderia with a trick request, locating a rectifier connector used on European 2004 450 KTM EXC. For the curious, ref#000.70.000.0AZ. It took them a week to get him the $6.58 part via special order and they did not charge him a dime more. We have been loyal customers ever since and were thrilled to get Moto Scuderia’s support for our adventure.
All Terrain Gear is a South African based company that makes superbly crafted luggage that is durable and lightweight. The company has two awesome rules: #1 Have fun, #2 Use the gear you make. Owner, Michnus Olivier, lives by these rules and is an enthusiastic adventurer himself. We were ecstatic when he agreed to send us some of the ATG Overlander motorcycle saddle bags with the handy waterproof inserts and a 50L rollbag at a deep discount. The Zebra is very proud to be bringing some South African made gear on the adventure.
Rotopax has made a name by itself by using a unique process to manufacture gasoline packs that are not only bullet-proof but also meet the stringent USA EPA requirements. What this means for us is peace of mind, knowing that we can carry extra fuel in packs that will not leak, pollute or wiggle on our bikes as we go through jumps, potholes and mud.
As hinted at in our Bike Prep section, the lack of kickstart on our DRs combined with the timid stator output made us nervous about getting stranded in the middle of Nicaragua on mechanically sound bikes we just couldn’t start. Shorai Batteries came recommended by several knowledgeable friends. What ultimately sold us is the one year shelf life, ability to withstand discharge and good cranking power.
BikeMaster makes a wide variety of motorcycle tools to take care of any mechanical problem. They have been kind enough to provide us with tools to prepare our bikes for the journey as well as some key items and tols that will help us to fix problems along the way.
